Source abstract

Abstract Inorganic-supported polymer electrolytes (iPEs) harmonize the characteristics of both organic polymers and inorganic components, thus bringing tremendous possibilities in improving the performance of polymer-based rechargeable batteries. Stemming from simple blending of inorganic particles, the iPE families have been conceptually expanded from non-ion-conducting (inactive) to ion-conducting (active) inorganic particles, from physical mixing to chemical modifications and high-order architecting. In this perspective, we provide a brief recap on the historical reflections on iPEs and highlight the opportunities by bridging two families of materials for electrolyte and battery optimization. We succinctly capture the fundamental properties of metal salts and inorganic components, then dive into the synergies between these two components with organic polymers. Furthermore, we put forward the critical impact of surface modifications of inorganic phases and expound intriguing high-order architecting approaches for improving the electrochemical properties of iPEs and their batteries. Finally, we discuss the possible directions to optimize the chemical structures of iPEs towards future battery technologies. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Electrolytes within the domain of electrochemistry and electrochemical energy storage’.
