Source abstract

This paper presents classroom-ready robotics activities developed within the “Digitalization Project in Steyr” and the Girl Bo(t)s_s initiative to support interdisciplinary STEAM+ and mathematics learning in Austrian compulsory schools. The work centers on activities for class use: analog Ozobot Color Codes and block-based programming tasks that teachers can deploy with minimal preparation, aligned to core mathematical topics (powers of ten 10n, multiplication tables, inequalities, coordinate paths, measurement and proportional reasoning via v=s/t, and elementary probability). The initiative combines teacher training (16 schools), school workshops (1004 students), and openly licensed OER (Open Educational Resources) (649 pages of material) to ensure scalable adoption and inclusive practice. Using an iterative, design-based research process, materials were co-created with educators, piloted across grades, and refined based on solvability, engagement, and learning outcomes. We report implementation guidance (calibration, line quality, task difficulties), models for differentiation (legend/no-legend versions, graded complexity, extensions), and evidence of high feasibility and student engagement. The paper contributes a curated set of classroom-tested exemplars, lesson structures, and design principles that help educators (N=151) integrate robotics and programming into mathematics instruction. Project’s outcomes include increased student fluency with sequencing, conditionals, measurement, and data recording; strengthened teacher confidence; and an expanding OER repository with forthcoming AR and 3D printing enhancements to deepen conceptual understanding and broaden access.
