Mathematics is involved with railways from its inception as railways itself as well as its structure built up and operation require high level of engineering knowledge and practice of mathematical precision. Initially, these practices were manual, rule based and experience dependent. With advent of computers, this place is immensely occupied by programming language and software use, which facilitated increase in scale of rail operation. Over time, new programming language and algorithm evolved and presently, machine learning and artificial intelligence alongwith various sensors and image processing are increasingly used in railways. From this perspective, this paper makes an attempt to search the specific mathematical programming, algorithms and software that are applied in railways planning.
