Source abstract

We determine the odd primes pp for which the number of distinct prime divisors of d−x2d-x^2 is at most 22 for every positive odd integers x≤px\leq\sqrt{p}. We also determine the odd primes pp for which the number of distinct prime divisors of 2p−x22p-x^2 is at most 22 for every positive even integers x≤2px\leq\sqrt{2p}. To this end, we show that these properties of pp and 2p2p impose restrictions on the class numbers and fundamental units of the real quadratic fields Q(p){\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{p}) and Q(2p){\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{2p}).
