Source abstract

We report on the results of an analysis of the mathematics education course literature in two teacher education programmes at Stockholm University, for preservice teachers for grades 4–6 and mathematics subject specialists for secondary school. The assumption is that the literature reflects the content offered to preservice teachers in the mathematics education courses at Stockholm University. The literature is also used to varying degrees at other higher education institutions in Sweden, and in the Nordic countries. We identified five types of text that mathematics student teachers are provided. The types can serve as a basis for teacher educators in discussions about the choice of literature and how it should be addressed in courses. The chapter also offers a language for how theoretical and practical ideas can be related to each other in the course literature and, by extension, in mathematics teacher education.
