Explicit reduced APN permutations: ramification and optimal Galois-ring lifts
Hiroki Fukui
Source abstract
Let be odd and . For every odd with and we give the reduced polynomial , , explicitly: it has coefficients in and exactly terms, it is an APN permutation of , and its formal derivative has no zero on and is two-to-one. We determine the ramification of as a map of the projective line for all admissible : there are finite ramification points, all wild, with index and different exponent , all over the single finite branch value . The lift of satisfies an identity in that evaluates it over every Galois ring with squarings, one general multiplication and additions or subtractions. For every quadratic optimal APN permutation of (in particular ), every and every coefficient lift of to , we determine the differential rows of exactly in the unit directions whose residue lies outside the kernel of the linear part of (they are the residue rows of ; for ) and in the directions in (every nonzero entry equals ). We also give a self-contained proof of the Li--Wang criterion for a Gold function plus a linearised polynomial, which explains why the inner map of is not a monomial, and record a two-word, two-layer transition that a simple linear layer forbids at the residue level.
