Source abstract

Given the importance of centering student thinking in mathematical learning, the K-8 Number Talk idea was adapted to an undergraduate Calculus environment. These discussions showcased flexibility and innovation with limits, derivatives, and integrals. GenAI was welcomed into classroom dialogues, fostering increased peer-to-peer engagement alongside comparisons of “thinking” from deep learning models. Assessing the legitimacy of chatbot-generated thinking proved to be both instructive and challenging, with some students learning to interpret GenAI’s output with a balance of optimism and skepticism.
