Source abstract

Discussions of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) safety often focus on the theoretical idea of "AI cancelation"-the ability to safely interrupt, roll back, or permanently decommission autonomous computational agents. Although popular discussions often imagine a simple "kill switch," canceling AI systems in the real world poses complex sociotechnical and mathematical challenges. This essay explores AI cancellation across three areas: theoretical alignment and instrumental convergence, dependencies on shared infrastructure, and social and institutional dynamics. It argues that as AI systems become more deeply woven into society, cancelation shifts from a mechanical task to a profound trade-off, shaped by emerging self-preservation behaviors and the ways existing systems depend on one another.
