Source abstract

Abstract Digital transformation is often heralded as a technological revolution, but its success hinges on the ability to manage profound organisational changes, particularly those related to culture and identity. This chapter explores the human dimensions of digital transformation, focusing on how technological shifts redefine organisational values, behaviours and practices. Drawing on real-world examples and theoretical insights, it examines the interplay between technology and organisational culture, highlighting the challenges of aligning digital strategies with established organisational norms. Central to the discussion is the concept of cultural alignment, where leadership must navigate resistance, mitigate dehumanisation and foster a shared vision amidst rapid change. This chapter offers a discourse for understanding how digital transformation triggers cultural ‘deterritorialisation’ – a disruption of entrenched identities and workflows – and outlines strategic choices for creating a cultural ‘rebirth’. Intended for managers and decision-makers, this chapter emphasises the importance of cultural due diligence as part of the digital transformation process. By addressing the human element alongside technological advancements, it provides actionable insights for achieving not just technological adoption, but holistic organisational evolution. Ultimately, it argues that successful digital transformation is not merely a question of technology but a matter of transforming leadership styles to the needs of the organisational members undergoing the transformation instead of the other way around.
