Source abstract

Fix integers k,b,qk,b,q with k≥2,b≥0,q≥2k\ge 2,b\ge 0,q\ge 2. Define the function pp to be: p(x)=kx+bp(x)=kx+b. We call a set SS of integers (k,b,q)(k,b,q)-linear-free if x∈Sx\in S implies pi(x)∉Sp^i (x)\notin S for all i=1,2,…,q−1i=1,2,\dots,q-1, where pi(x)=p(pi−1(x))p^i (x)=p\left(p^{i-1}(x)\right) and p0(x)=xp^0 (x)=x. Such a set SS is maximal in [n]:={1,2,…,n}[n]:=\{1,2,\dots,n\} if S∪{t},∀t∈[n]\SS\cup \{t\},\forall t\in [n]\backslash S is not (k,b,q)(k,b,q)-linear-free. Let Mk,b,q(n)M_{k,b,q} (n) be the set of all maximal (k,b,q)(k,b,q)-linear-free subsets of [n][n], and define gk,b,q(n)=min⁡S∈Mk,b,q(n)∣S∣g_{k,b,q} (n)=\min_{S\in M_{k,b,q} (n)}|S| and fk,b,q(n)=max⁡S∈Mk,b,q(n)∣S∣f_{k,b,q} (n)=\max_{S\in M_{k,b,q} (n)}|S|. In this paper, formulae for gk,b,q(n)g_{k,b,q} (n) and fk,b,q(n)f_{k,b,q} (n) are proposed. Also, it is proven that there is at least one maximal (k,b,q)(k,b,q)-linear-free subset of [n][n] with exactly xx elements for any integer xx between gk,b,q(n)g_{k,b,q} (n) and fk,b,q(n)f_{k,b,q} (n), inclusively.
