Environmental sustainability has become a critical concern in the global sports industry due to increasing awareness of climate change, resource depletion, carbon emissions, and ecological degradation. While sports contribute significantly to social development, health promotion, and economic growth, sporting events, facilities, transportation systems, and equipment production often generate substantial environmental impacts. Consequently, sports organizations, governments, and international governing bodies have increasingly embraced sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing carbon footprints and promoting environmentally responsible practices. This paper examines the concept of environmental sustainability in sports, explores major innovations adopted by the sports sector, and analyzes the challenges that hinder sustainable development. Through a review of global literature, policy frameworks, and contemporary case studies, the study highlights green stadiums, renewable energy integration, sustainable event management, waste reduction strategies, and technological innovations as key drivers of environmental sustainability. The paper concludes with recommendations for strengthening sustainability practices across the sports ecosystem.
