Source abstract

We prove that for positive integers kk, nn, and d>1d>1, there is a maximal c(k,n,d)>1c(k,n,d)>1 such that if X⊂CnX \subset \mathbb{C}^n is a connected kk-dimensional complex algebraic set with degree at most dd and dist(X)<c(k,n,d)dist(X) < c(k,n,d), then XX must be a complex affine linear subspace, where dist(X)dist(X) denotes the distortion of XX and is given by the supremum of the ratios dinner(p,q)/douter(p,q)d_{inner}(p, q)/d_{outer}(p, q) for all p,q∈Xp,q\in X with p≠qp\not= q. We also prove that c(1,n,d)=2c(1,n,d)=\sqrt{2} for any positive integers kk and nn. This result provides a sharp rigidity phenomenon for curves in the cc-LNE category, showing that near-isometric behavior of the inner and outer metrics forces the curve to be as simple as possible.
