Source abstract
In upper secondary school teaching, vocational and university-preparatory mathematics may be more or less sharply separated. We analyse two modules in the Swedish in-service teacher education programme, The Mathematics Lift, based on sociological concepts of local and general activities. The analysis informs a critical discussion about the possible socially reproductive effects of the division. We further present some research perspectives that can challenge the separation of vocational and university-preparatory mathematics and offer opportunities for substantiated pedagogical reflections, namely realistic mathematics teaching, autonomous participation and critical mathematics. In this way, we hope to inspire teachers to imagine what is possible in a classroom situation.
