Source abstract

Measuring academic performance is vital in higher education, where it plays a fundamental role beyond simple grading. Therefore, this article on student performance in Mathematics II at the Universidad Nacional Experimental del Táchira (UNET) is of great relevance, since it is considered a key indicator of academic success for a university student. Performance should be analyzed from various perspectives, including systemic and operational factors affecting the quality of education. Where evaluation, as a methodical and scientific process, provides the data required for the study of it and plays a fundamental role in understanding mathematical learning. The research has a quantitative and descriptive approach, using data from grades obtained by students in four academic periods in 2024. A statistical analysis is performed that includes central trend and scatter measures, as well as an analysis of variance (ANOVA) to compare ratings between periods. In addition, performance, dropout and failure indicators are calculated to assess students' academic performance. The results show that the average grade is close to the minimum pass mark of five points, indicating a performance which is hardly acceptable. The rate of return was above 62% in all periods, but dropout and reprobate rates were worrying, especially in 2024-0, where reprobates reached 29%. The variance analysis shows significant differences in average ratings between periods, highlighting 2024-3 as the most successful with an average of 5.26 points. In conclusion, the study underlines the need to identify areas of improvement in the teaching processes of learning in mathematics II, considering the regular average as well as high drop-out and failure rates; to promote the efficiency and quality of education at UNET.
