Source abstract

Just as the definition of geometry as the starting point of geometrical systems in academic mathematics, the definitions of geometrical terms in school mathematics have a great influence on the learning of geometrical concepts. This study focuses on how to define the geometrical terms in order to encourage students’ meaningful understanding based on the importance of definitions in teaching and learning of geometry. This study classified the definitions of geometrical terms for elementary school mathematics according to the methods of definition in the textbooks from the 1st to the 2015 national revised curriculum and analyzed the change patterns. As a result, the proportion of the methods of definition used varied according to the curriculum and the characteristics of each curriculum can be deduced according to the ratio of main intensional method. Also, some terms were defined by a consistent method, other terms showed a change in the methods of definition. Based on these results, we suggested several implications how to define geometrical terms to be presented in elementary mathematics textbooks.
