Source abstract

A lot of wireline induction and logging-while-drilling (LWD) resistivity tools include a long metal mandrel encompassed by solenoid transmitting and receiving coils. In this paper we discuss the choice of boundary conditions and, consequently, the type of the solution which could be reasonable to use for modeling the electromagnetic field generated by a solenoid with a metal mandrel inserted. Evaluation of the role of conductor magnetic permeability in making the right choice has been performed. We characterized also a mandrel effect — the impact of the metal mandrel on a solution. All our results, conclusions, and recommendations are based on mathematical modeling for the suite of 1D and 2D benchmark models and tool configurations. To explain the basic behavior of an EM field, we also considered low-frequency asymptotic expansions of the components of EM field.
