Source abstract

Let a smooth family of Riemannian metrics g(τ)g(\tau) satisfy the backwards Ricci flow equation on a compact oriented nn-dimensional manifold MM. Suppose two families of normalized nn-forms ω(τ)≥0\omega(\tau) \ge 0 and ω~(τ)≥0\tilde \omega(\tau) \ge 0 satisfy the forwards (in τ\tau) heat equation on MM generated by the connection Laplacian Δg(τ)\Delta_{g(\tau)}. If these nn-forms represent two evolving distributions of particles over MM, the minimum root-mean-square distance W2(ω(τ),ω~(τ),τ)W_2(\omega(\tau),\tilde \omega(\tau),\tau) to transport the particles of ω(τ)\omega(\tau) onto those of ω~(τ)\tilde \omega(\tau) is shown to be non-increasing as a function of τ\tau, without sign conditions on the curvature of (M,g(τ))(M,g(\tau)). Moreover, this contractivity property is shown to characterize supersolutions to the Ricci flow.
