Source abstract

This study aimed to determine the level of study habits of students from the regular class and the Special Program in Mathematics (SPM) in terms of time management, concentration, and preparation for examination, as well as their level of academic performance in mathematics. Moreover, it sought to examine if there was a significant relationship between the study habits and academic performance of students. This study employed descriptive-correlation method and data were collected using an adopted survey questionnaire. Similarly, the students’ grades in mathematics were collected from the teacher’s records. The participants of this study were forty-eight (48) students from Sarrat National High School, where twenty-four (24) students came from each class. The data gathered were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Pearson r. The findings revealed that the students from both classes have high level of study habits in terms of time management, concentration, and preparation for examination. Furthermore, SPM and regular class have outstanding and satisfactory performance, respectively. In regular class, it showed that time management and concentration were the best predictors of the academic performance of the students; however, examination preparation may not be a factor. Conversely, the study habits in terms of time management, concentration, and preparation for examination were associated with the academic performance of the students from SPM. Overall, the results indicate that study habits are important predictors as part of students’ success in their academic performance in mathematics.
