Source abstract

In the context of mathematics education, cultivating strong problem-solving skills is essential for pre-service teachers. These skills not only enhance academic performance but also prepare future educators to guide students in tackling complex mathematical tasks. This study examined the predictive relationship between growth mindset and YouTube usage on the problem-solving skills of Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Mathematics students at Kolehiyo ng Pantukan. Employing a predictive-correlational research design, data were gathered from 128 students using validated survey questionnaires. Results revealed that students demonstrated a high level of growth mindset (M = 4.29), YouTube usage (M = 3.99), and problem-solving skills (M = 3.94). Correlation analysis indicated a moderate positive relationship between growth mindset and problem-solving skills (r = 0.59, p < .001, R² = 0.35), and a high positive relationship between YouTube usage and problem-solving skills (r = 0.71, p < .001, R² = 0.50). Regression analysis confirmed that both predictors significantly influenced problem-solving skills (F = 81.20, p < .001), with YouTube usage (β = 0.52, t = 7.28, p < .001) exerting a stronger effect than growth mindset (β = 0.32, t = 4.41, p < .001). These findings underscore the importance of fostering growth mindset and promoting purposeful use of digital platforms such as YouTube to strengthen mathematical problem-solving competence among future educators.
