Reconstructing a 140-Year Historiography of Misinterpretation: A Forensic Reassessment of the Tarawera Eruption and the Pink and White Terraces

The eruption of Mount Tarawera on 10 June 1886 devastated the region and buried one of the Victorian world’s natural wonders, prompting widespread concern across the British Empire. The fate of the Pink and White Terraces has long been treated as settled: that both formations were destroyed. This paper re-examines that conclusion through an historiographic and spatial analysis of the evidence. Drawing on nineteenth-century documentation, survey data, cartography and Māori testimony, this paper reconstructs how the destruction narrative formed across five generations of scholarship. It shows that the conclusion originated under conditions of uncertainty in the aftermath of the eruption. Rather than being verified, this interpretation was reproduced through citation in scientific and public discourse without systematic re-evaluation of its spatial premises. Evidence inconsistent with the dominant interpretation — including early Māori accounts and pre-eruption survey data — remained marginal to the prevailing narrative. The paper argues that the Terraces question was not conclusively resolved, but prematurely closed. More broadly, it identifies a recurrent pattern in the historiography of disaster: explanations formed under conditions of uncertainty. These may stabilise into durable interpretations that resist later scrutiny. Reassessment in such cases requires a return to the primary evidence and a re-examination of the inherited cartographic and interpretive structures.
