Source abstract

In this chapter, the authors present adaptive and self-responsive structure systems that sense, decide, and alter their mechanical, geometric, or functional state autonomously are emerging as a transformative class of engineered systems across aerospace, civil, marine, and architectural domains. This chapter synthesizes the scientific foundations, design methodologies, material systems, sensing and control approaches, modeling tools, and evaluation metrics necessary for designing adaptive structures that are robust, energy efficient, and safe. It presents representative case studies (morphing aerodynamic surfaces, adaptive building façades, self-tuning vibration absorbers), proposes an integrated design framework, and outlines experimental and computational protocols for validation. Key challenges (multi-physics coupling, reliability, scalability, and standards), ethical and sustainability considerations, and a roadmap for future research are discussed. Practical recommendations and a curated set of references are included for researchers and practitioners seeking to design
