Source abstract

Let XX be an algebraic variety of dimension dd over an algebraically closed field kk of zero characteristic. Suppose that GG is a virtually polycyclic subgroup in the group Bir(X)\mathrm{Bir}(X) of birational automorphisms of XX. We show that the virtual derived length of GG does not exceed 2d+12d+1. Moreover, if XX is a surface, the bound can be improved to 33, and this value is optimal.
