Source abstract

We prove the norm principle for the extended Clifford group Ω(q)Ω(q) of every nondegenerate quadratic form qq of even dimension at least 44 over an arbitrary field FF of characteristic different from 22, for all finite separable field extensions L/FL/F. The main new ingredient is a factorization theorem for proper similitudes: for a quadratic extension L/FL/F and f∈GO+(q)(L)f\in \mathrm{GO}^+(q)(L), there exist u∈SO(q)(L)u\in \mathrm{SO}(q)(L), a maximal FF-torus S⊂GO+(q)S\subset \mathrm{GO}^+(q), and s∈S(L)s\in S(L) such that f=usf=us.
