Source abstract

Consider an nn-dimensional sum of the form Sk=∑qf(z)S_k=\sum{q^{f({\bf z})}} over lattice points z{\bf z} which lie in KPK{\mathcal P}, the KK scaling of an nn-dimensional rational polytope P\mathcal P. We formulate a conjecture on the structure of SKS_K considered for KK prime, as a power series in h=q−1h=q-1 modulo the KthK^{th} cyclotomic polynomial, and in particular the existence of a decomposition in powers of the Gauss sum G\mathbb G, up to the nthn^{th}, whose coefficients are almost independent of KK, where the leading coefficient is related to the volume of P\mathcal P and the coefficient of Gr{\mathbb G}^r has contributions from the codimension rr skeleton of P\mathcal P. The conjecture is proved for n=1,2n=1,2.
