The Future-Directed Organization of Theories: Reusability, Inferential Costs, and Path Dependence in Mathematical and Scientific Knowledge

Formal theories are not organized solely to state what is true. They also employ definitions, named results, labels, numbering systems, classifications, and explicit dependency structures that make parts of a theory easier to identify, invoke, combine, and extend. This paper develops a conceptual account of these practices under the heading future-directed theoretical organization. The proposal joins three levels of analysis: the local economics of articulating reusable knowledge units; the way organized units alter the practical costs and opportunities of subsequent inference; and the path-dependent effects through which established definitions, labels, and dependencies shape later research. The central claim is not that every definition or theorem name is deliberately designed for future use, nor that formal organization changes logical consequence. Rather, organizational choices can change the practical accessibility, combinability, and developmental trajectory of a body of knowledge while leaving its inferential content unchanged. A simple expected-value model identifies conditions under which explicit articulation is beneficial and incorporates uncertainty, maintenance costs, and rigidity. Six propositions distinguish reuse, complexity, generativity, path dependence, interoperability, and over-organization. The paper situates the proposal in relation to work on mathematical practice, external representations, modularity, scientific classification, and conceptual change. It claims a modest contribution: an integrative explanatory model and research agenda, not an established empirical law. The account is applicable, with qualifications, to mathematics and other formal or semi-formal sciences in which theories contain reusable concepts, results, models, rules, and inferential dependencies.
