When justifying the main dimensions of a combined river-sea cargo ship, the fairway depth is usually assumed constant, whereas on inland waterways it varies along the route and limits the draft at shallow stretches (riffles). The aim of this work is to develop a mathematical model of a dry-cargo ship in which variable depth is treated, already at the stage of selecting the main dimensions, as the dominant random operational factor. Unlike the sequential scheme, in which the hull, propeller and main engine are chosen one after another, in the proposed model they are matched within a single iterative cycle, so that a change in depth is transmitted through all coupled subsystems simultaneously. Water resistance is calculated by the Holtrop – Mennen method with shallow-water corrections, and the propeller is computed using the Wageningen B-series polynomials. In addition, the calculation of the hold volume utilization coefficient is refined: instead of a tabulated value, it is determined through the structural parameters of the hull, so that the depth of the ship is found simultaneously from the conditions of buoyancy and capacity. The adequacy of the model was verified on three prototype ships of the M-SP class (combined river-sea navigation) – RSD49, RSD59 and RSD71: the error in the main dimensions did not exceed 2.5%, in displacement about 1.5%, and in power up to 13%. The numerical experiment showed that, with a fixed hull, a reduction in depth increases the required power by only about 15%, whereas a complete redesign of the ship for the same deadweight increases the power manyfold. The novelty lies in the fact that the single cycle reveals the true scale of the shallow-water effect, hidden in sequential models, and makes it possib-le to match the draft with the actual depth availability already at an early design stage.
