Source abstract

Let XX be a smooth projective Calabi-Yau variety of dimension 33, with Picard number one. Let nn be the self-intersection of the ample generator of the Néron-Severi group of XX. Let GVg,d\mathsf{GV}_{g,d} be the Gopakumar-Vafa invariant of XX of genus gg and degree dd. It is conjectured that {\it if g>d22n+d2+1g>\frac{d^{2}}{2n}+\frac{d}{2}+1, then GVg,d=0\mathsf{GV}_{g,d}=0}. In this paper, we prove the implication when d≫nd\gg n and X⊂PrX\subset \mathbb P^r is a complete intersection in projective space. The vanishing follows by proving that if CC is a closed subscheme of XX of dimension 11, arithmetic genus pa(C)p_a(C), and degree d≫nd\gg n, then pa(C)≤d22n+d2+1p_a(C) \leq \frac{d^2}{2n}+\frac{d}{2}+1. Actually, we prove a somewhat more general result. In particular, we prove that CC is an extremal curve if and only if CC is the complete intersection on XX with a hyperplane HH and a hypersurface FF, namely C=X∩H∩FC=X\cap H\cap F.
