Dual-lumen microcatheter facilitating multiple injection positions in radioembolization: proof of principle

Abstract Selective radioembolization of liver tumors requires multiple injection positions, necessitating delivery catheter repositioning. Conventional single-lumen microcatheters risk guidewire contamination when repositioned after microsphere injection, requiring catheter disposal after each injection. We describe a technique using a dual-lumen microcatheter, in which one lumen accommodates the guidewire throughout the procedure while microspheres are injected through the second lumen, physically separating the two to prevent guidewire contamination and enable sequential injections from multiple positions. This approach was successfully applied in two patients undergoing radioembolization with multiple injection positions. This proof-of-principle investigation suggests that the dual-lumen technique may prevent guidewire contamination and may reduce material waste and procedure time. However, these findings require confirmation in larger studies.
