Abstract Stress-strain behaviour of polycrystals and composites is explored with self-consistent models based on the elastic-plastic properties of the single crystal constituents. Based on Hill’s (1965a) model, tensile stress-strain curves and the associated yield surfaces are calculated for polycrystals and composites comprised of face-centred cubic crystals. Single crystal elastic anisotropy and strain hardening are taken into account. Stress-strain behaviour at a corner of the yield surface is determined with the model proposed by Kröner (1961) and Budiansky & Wu (1962).
