Source abstract

In this paper, we present FragmentVis, a browser-based visual analytics system for the retrospective analysis of digital jigsaw puzzle-solving behavior. During play, the system captures piece-level telemetry that describes the manipulation and assembly history of individual pieces. This level of detail may be needed because aggregate measures, such as completion time or success rate, do not show how a player actually constructs a solution. With FragmentVis, we map the recorded data back to the spatial structure of the solved puzzle and present it through coordinated dashboard and inspection views. These views allow users to look back on the solving process and see how individual piece interactions relate to the completed image. We developed the system through an iterative design process informed by two rounds of user evaluation. Our results suggest that image-aligned heatmaps and coordinated dashboard views were perceived as useful and interpretable for strategy reflection and piece-level process inspection.
