Source abstract

Adult numeracy is essential for work, daily decision-making, and participation in learning; yet, many adults continue to experience difficulty with core mathematical skills. Recent evidence from secondary mathematics suggests that gamified learning, which incorporates points, challenges, feedback, and digital game tools, can enhance motivation and foster engagement with mathematical concepts. This literature review examines how these approaches can be adapted to strengthen adult numeracy programs. A systematic search across education and technology databases identified 33 studies through a PRISMA process. Interpreted through Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the findings indicate that gamified environments can enhance autonomy, competence, and relatedness, reduce mathematics anxiety, and foster problem-solving. Effective strategies included escape rooms, digital quizzes, and game challenges that provide immediate feedback. The review highlights the importance of adapting these tools for adult learners through flexible pacing and low-pressure assessment formats that build confidence.
