Source abstract

Fix d≥1d\ge1 and choose a polynomial PP uniformly at random from the set of integer polynomials of degree dd whose coefficients have absolute value at most HH. We study EPE_{P}, the error in the count of squarefree values P(n)P(n) for n≤xn\leq x. In the range x=Ho(1)x=H^{o\left(1\right)}, we prove that EP(x)/x14E_{P}\left(x\right)/x^{\frac{1}{4}} converges to a Gaussian mixture that is not itself Gaussian, C(G)Z\sqrt{C\left(G\right)}Z, where GG is the weak limit, as H→∞H\rightarrow\infty, of the prime-indexed vector (P mod p2)p\left(P\bmod p^{2}\right)_{p}, CC is a nonnegative function and ZZ is an independent standard Gaussian. This answers a question of Sofos. Finally, in the appendix, we establish that log⁡E[C(G)m]≍dm2/(log⁡m)2\log \mathbb{E}[C(G)^m]\asymp_d m^2/(\log m)^2 as m→∞m\to\infty.
