Gender-related influences frequently shape individuals’ access to and engagement in graduate education. This study explored the motivations, challenges, and outcomes associated with advanced studies among mathematics educators in a state university setting. Through a qualitative study, thematic analysis of interviews with 23 participants revealed 12 key themes, highlighting intrinsic aspirations for personal growth, career progression, and subject expertise as major driving forces. Gender dynamics played a crucial role in shaping educators’ experiences, with women facing additional challenges such as societal expectations, caregiving responsibilities, and gender biases in professional advancement. Participants also identified significant barriers, including balancing professional, academic, and family responsibilities, financial limitations, and the need for institutional flexibility. The pursuit of graduate education was shown to enhance instructional quality by fostering improved pedagogical skills, reflective teaching, and the integration of researchbased innovations. Findings suggest that flexible program structures, targeted financial aid, genderinclusive policies, and practical, career-relevant curricula are critical to supporting educators in their professional development journey. Implementing these strategies can strengthen teacher effectiveness and contribute to improved student achievement in mathematics while promoting gender equity in academia.
