Source abstract

The response or interest from second grade students in MI Muhammadiyah Ponorogo to learn mathematics is still low marked by a small number of students participating, less concentration and attentiveness and passively when doing learning activities. Mathematics has such an image among students, that it is a tough and a boring area. Math often a popular subject student. Therefore, innovative teaching methods are needed to increase students’ interest and engagement. This study aims to examine and describe the use of flashcards as a teaching tool in mathematics learning and to determine how this method can improve students’ learning interest and active participation. A mixed-methods approach was employed in this study. The research subjects consisted of homeroom teachers and second-grade students at MI Muhammadiyah Ponorogo, with the research focus being the use of flashcards in mathematics instruction. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model, which includes data condensation, data presentation, and drawing conclusions, as well as quantitative analysis using the N-Gain test. Data validity was assessed through source and technique triangulation to ensure the credibility and accuracy of the findings. The results show that, first, the use of interactive, game-based flashcards was effective in attracting students’ attention. Second, this method increased students’ interest in learning, as indicated by greater attention, enthusiasm, engagement, and focus. Third, students’ active participation also improved, as reflected in their willingness to ask questions, answer questions, and interact with both teachers and classmates. In conclusion, the use of flashcards is effective in increasing students’ interest and engagement in mathematics learning. It is recommended that teachers develop creative and varied teaching materials and adapt them to students’ characteristics so that the learning process becomes more engaging and meaningful.
