Recent quantitative literature in mathematics education has exposed a critical empirical paradox: neither classroom management nor mastery-oriented instructional practices statistically mediate the relationship between teachers' Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) and secondary student achievement. Because quantitative designs rely on standardized numerical surveys, they frequently treat the interactive classroom environment as a black box, leaving the operational mechanisms behind this statistical breakdown completely unexplained. To address this literature gap, this interpretive qualitative multi-case study investigated the lived experiences of secondary school students within the Kumasi Metropolis of Ghana to explore why traditional structural optimization fails to translate into conceptual understanding. Four distinct public Senior High School mathematics classrooms characterized by highly qualified instructors yet uneven student performance were selected as bounded cases. Data collection was thoroughly triangulated over a two-month period using non-participant classroom observations, four student focus group discussions ( n = 32 ), and four semi-structured teacher interviews. Following an inductive and deductive thematic analysis guided by Self-Determination Theory, the findings revealed that students predominantly experience classroom management as a restrictive mechanism of rigid behavioral control rather than an instructional resource. Although strict behavioral strategies successfully secure classroom silence, they create an atmosphere of intense emotional anxiety that thwarts students' basic psychological needs for autonomy and relatedness. This psychological alienation creates a severe instructional barrier where students become passive spectators who engage in superficial compliance and rote copying rather than the cognitive vulnerability required to master complex mathematical tasks. Consequently, high teacher PCK remains pedagogically locked within a teacher-centered framework because the controlling environment actively thwarts the interactive, communicative discourse necessary for internalizing knowledge. This study concludes that classroom management fails as a statistical mediator because it prioritizes structural containment over genuine cognitive engagement. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service restructure professional development to favor autonomy-supportive management frameworks and relational, error-tolerant learning environments.
