Source abstract

Abstract Two equal, circular, coaxial discs at a small separation are rotating slowly with equal and opposite angular velocities in a viscous fluid. The purpose of this investigation is to find asymptotically the turning couple on each disc as their separation approaches zero. The problem was formulated by Cooke [2] as an integral equation. This is solved asymptotically by splitting the field into two regions, one being an annulus containing the edges, the other being the rest of the domain, and combining these solutions. Use is then made of a technique related to a variational method to obtain an accurate asymptotic expression for the turning couple from a much less accurate solution of the integral equation.
