MIGRATION, IDENTITY AND SOCIAL COHESION IN POSTCOLONIAL ENGLISH LITERATURE

Migration is one of the most important experiences of the modern world. Many people leave their home countries because of war, poverty, education, work, or better opportunities. In postcolonial societies, migration is closely connected to the history of colonialism and globalization. Postcolonial English literature beautifully presents these experiences and shows that migration is not only about moving from one place to another, but also about searching for identity and belonging. This paper studies how postcolonial writers describe the lives of migrants. In many novels and stories, migrant characters feel confused about who they are. They often struggle between their home culture and the new culture they enter.They may feel lonely, excluded, or misunderstood in the new society. At the same time, they try to adjust, build relationships, and create a new sense of self. Their identity becomes mixed and flexible, shaped by both past memories and present realities. The paper also discusses the idea of social cohesion, which means living together peacefully in a society. Postcolonial literature shows that migration can create tension because of racism, cultural differences, and fear of outsiders. However, these literary works also suggest hope. They show that understanding, dialogue, and respect can help build stronger and more inclusive communities.Through the study of selected postcolonial texts, this paper argues that literature helps us understand the emotional and human side of migration. It reminds us that migrants are not just numbers in policies, but individuals with dreams, struggles, and identities. In this way, postcolonial English literature offers important insights into migration, identity, and the possibility of unity in diverse societies.
