Abstract The ratio between the flux of the energy taken out by the vortex generation process ev, and the incoming wave energy flux ew, is shown to be given by ev/ew ≈ 2α⅔/{μ[K21(μ) + π2I21(μ)]}4/3, where α = νr0 and μ = νT are non-dimensional parameters and K1, I1 are modified Bessel functions. The parameters r0 and ν are the amplitude and wavenumber of the incoming wave, respectively, and T is the draught of the plate. This theoretically derived formula is in good agreement with experimental evidence.
