This study analyzes the pedagogical and logistical elements that influenced the achievement of scientific and research competencies during the implementation of the Virtual Diploma in Biomathematics (BIOMATH-BS) in Panama. The program revealed strong interest among university students, mainly from engineering fields, although the approval rate was low (12%). A correlation was observed between prior training and performance: engineering students demonstrated greater technical proficiency, while biology students excelled in qualitative interpretation. The low participation of biology and mathematics students, essential disciplines for Biomathematics, was a noteworthy finding. The qualitative analysis revealed high initial motivation to integrate knowledge and explore systems biology and computational modeling. The experience contributed to the emergence of a developing scientific community in the country. BIOMATH-BS represented a pioneering interdisciplinary experience, demonstrating the feasibility of linking complex content with adapted teaching strategies. Key learning factors included modular design, a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, and the use of interactive digital platforms. Challenges related to connectivity, time availability, and familiarity with computational tools were identified, although strengths were also evident across participant groups, supporting the successful completion of the program.
