Source abstract

Let M2M^2 be a compact Willmore surface in the nn-dimensional unit sphere. Denote by ϕijα\phi_{ij}^{\alpha} the tracefree part of the second fundamental form hijαh_{ij}^{\alpha} of M2,M^2, and by H\mathbb{H} the mean curvature vector of M2.M^2. Let Φ\Phi be the square of the length of ϕijα\phi_{ij}^{\alpha} and H=∣H∣H=|\mathbb{H}|. We prove that if 0≤Φ≤C(1+H28)0\leq\Phi\leq C(1+\frac{H^2}{8}), where C=2C=2 when n=3n=3 and C=43C=\frac{4}{3} when n≥4n \geq 4, then either Φ=0\Phi=0 and M2M^2 is totally umbilic or Φ=C(1+H28)\Phi=C(1+\frac{H^2}{8}). In the latter case, either n=3n=3 and M2M^2 is the Clifford torus or n=4n=4 and M2M^2 is the Veronese surface.
