Source abstract

For a graph GG, let ν(G)ν(G) denote the maximum number of pairwise edge-disjoint triangles and let τ(G)τ(G) denote the minimum number of edges meeting every triangle. Tuza's conjecture asserts that τ(G)≤2ν(G)τ(G)\le 2ν(G) for every graph GG. We first note that Tuza's conjecture is equivalent to the following statement: for every fixed c≥0c\ge 0, if GG is a sufficiently large nn-vertex graph with e(G)≥n2/4−cne(G)\ge n^2/4-cn, then τ(G)≤2ν(G)τ(G)\le 2ν(G). In this paper, we prove this statement for every c<2c<2.
