Focal Conchoids of Conics
Roman Hašek
Source abstract
The concept of a plane curve as the conchoid of another curve is well established and widely discussed in the literature on the geometry of plane curves. In this paper, we examine in greater detail the properties of so-called focal conchoids of conic sections. Inspired by a brief remark by Lockwood in A Book of Curves (1961), we focus on their dependence on the type of conic and on the magnitude of the conchoid parameter. Dynamic geometry software, in particular GeoGebra, is used extensively both as a tool for investigating the geometric properties of focal conchoids and as a means of designing exploratory tasks suitable for the education of pre-service teachers in university-level courses on conics and other plane curves.
